Natural Flooring Guide: Sisal vs Seagrass vs Coir

Natural flooring is a timeless interior design trend. But these plant fibers are very different beasts. Here is your cheat sheet.

Sisal: The popular all-rounder. Made from the Agave plant. It is tough, takes dye well (so comes in many colors), and is crisp but not too rough. Best for: Stairs and Living Rooms.

Seagrass: The waterproof warrior. Grown in paddy fields, it has a waxy coating that resists stains naturally. It typically only comes in its natural greenish-brown hue. Best for: Dining Rooms and Halls. View Seagrass ranges.

Coir: The rustic brute. Made from coconut husks. It is incredibly rough, hairy, and tough. It's too rough for bare feet but amazing for scrubbing mud off shoes. Best for: Entrance Matting (Door Mats). View Coir ranges.

Jute: The softie. Silky and soft but delicate. It wears out fast and hates water. Best for: Low traffic bedrooms only.

Warning: Almost all natural flooring hates water (except Seagrass to an extent). You cannot steam clean it. It must be vacuumed and dry cleaned only.
