5 Tips to Make Your Carpet Last Longer

Carpets are an expensive purchase. Here are 5 simple things you can do to make yours last years longer.

1. Vacuum Often (and Correctly): Dirt acts like sandpaper at the base of the pile, cutting the fibers when walked on. Vacuum high-traffic areas 2-3 times a week. Use the 'beater bar' setting for cut piles to lift dust, but turn it off for loop piles (to prevent snagging).

2. Entrance Mats are Critical: 80% of dirt comes in on shoes. A large coir or barrier mat at the front door traps grit before it reaches your living room. Make it big enough to take two steps on.

3. No Shoes Rule: It sounds strict, but shoes carry oil, grit, and mud. Socks or slippers are much kinder to the pile.

4. Move Furniture: Heavy sofas crush the pile. Every 6 months, move furniture an inch or two. Use castor cups to spread the weight and steam out indentations with an iron and a damp cloth.

5. Professional Cleaning: Don't wait until it looks dirty. Hire a professional steam cleaner (hot water extraction) every 18-24 months. This flushes out the deep-seated grit and oily residues that vacuuming misses, restoring the pile's bounce.
