Moth Proof Carpet: Do I Need It?

The Common Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella) is the enemy of wool carpet. Their larvae feed on the keratin protein found in natural fibers (wool), leaving bald patches and threadbare spots.

Who is at risk? Moths prefer dark, undisturbed areas. Under sofas, behind TV cabinets, and in spare rooms are prime targets. If you buy a wool carpet, you are potentially at risk.

The Solution:

• 1. Synthetic Carpet: Moths cannot eat plastic. Polypropylene or Nylon carpets are 100% moth-proof. If you have a history of moths, this is the safest choice.

• 2. Treated Wool: Most quality manufacturers (like Cormar) treat their wool carpets with a moth-resistant chemical (like Eulan) during production. This makes the wool unpalatable to larvae and usually comes with a warranty (often 10 years). Check the label!

• 3. Prevention: Regular vacuuming, especially under furniture, disrupts the moth lifecycle. Disturbing the dark corners is your best defense.
